My girlfriend and I are visiting Placencia and Ambergris Caye in a few weeks. I'm already planning to do a few dives in Ambergris Caye, but I'd also like to dive/snorkel in Placencia. A few questions:

1. Any recommendations on dive operators in Placencia? Specific dive sites? I've been certified for 2 years and have about 6 post-certification dives under my belt. (We're staying at Turtle Inn, so any feedback on the dive folks there would be welcomed!)

2. Is there anywhere in Placencia where you can snorkel off the beach? My girlfriend is intending to read and soak up sun, so I'd like to do some snorkeling off the beach if possible. Is there anywhere decent to do that, or do you have to take a boat out to a caye to find decent snorkeling?

3. For the 1-2 times when we do take a boat snorkeling trip, what sites would you recommend?

Thanks so much!

The Nautical Inn near Seine Bight Village and the Rum Point Inn both offer diving The Rum Point Inn is closest to the Turtle Inn and I believe they go out daily. Snorkeling can be done off the beach at Maya Beach with the best area being just South of the Singing Sands Resort. There are decent but not spectacular coral formations and the area can be subject to poor visibility. You need two prior days of calm weather to make conditions half decent Enjoy your trip!

At this time the largest boat operating on the peninsula is Rum Point's Auriga. This means they might get out to the better areas on those days when smaller boats would offer a rougher ride. As jford says, snorkeling from the beach can be good, but often times it is not, so trips to the outer cayes and reef are best. Stay wet and have fun, that's what it's all about.

Correction on my last post. The best snorkeling area is NORTH of the Singing Sanda Resort at Maya Beach.

For diving or snorkeling trips you might try Aquatic Adventures - Glen Eiley in Placencia. They have a rather large boat which gets you to the reef fast enough.
