Breaking News: The Reporter has confirmed that a body has been discovered in the Rivera Area of Belmopan about 20 mins ago. While Police have yet to confirm identity officially, sources say unofficially it is British national Richard Foster, 63, resident of Mile 28.5 George Price Highway who was reported missing today. Foster' s home was found ransacked and his Toyota Hilux and two firearms were missing. We'll have more information as it becomes available.

This is so sad. Belize is not a tropical paradise.

I used to live in the Belize Banana Republic but never felt unsafe. I might now. It is impoverished but so is Nicaragua but the latter has 1/2 the violent crime due to better policing and judiciary. In Belize theft and fleecing were pastimes. Not many beggars in Merida. Not much crime either. Plus there is Sams, Home Depot and Cosco. Hard to imagine a life without ready access to fresh strawberries, a functional light fixture, tender NY strip and a bottle of Bourdeaux or a six of Modelo negro. Belize is not ever going to be a top flight retirement location

Exactly; the whole idea of "paradise" is a human construct. Wherever there are people, you have the human condition: suffering that is the consequence of ignorance, intolerance and greed.

Thank you, Osprey, for expressing the crux of the matter better than I ever could.

P.S. Methinks DrMexico is an old troll poster here under a new name??????? The writing style is awfully familiar.

Yes gzb I used to be that gadfly g&t but he passed on and is resurrected now as DrMex. He and the Mrs now live 1/2 time in Merida, 1/2 in Canuckistan. This is such a vast improvement over Belize its hard to document succinctly
Homicide rate Belize 43/100k Yucatan 1.2/100k
Cost of living 30% lower in Merida
Superior acquisition of commodities and amenities and eateries
Better medical care esp advanced, trauma and chronic
Friendly locals not in your face for loans

Belize is not improving as an expat relocation site. Except for oddballs, eccentrics and fugitives

Me too, not a fugitive (not yet anyway, but there is still time), so it's oddball and eccentric for me. Proudly!
