Well, it's certainly better than nothing, but does anyone really think that 6 weeks is enough to impart professional-level skills in welding and machining, mechanics, refrigeration, air conditioning, plumbing, or computer technology?

It is a LOT better than nothing. A 6 week intensive course can impart a lot of knowledge, and no doubt these young people are going on this course because they WANT to learn. It is not a time filler course for something to check out while a kid tries to decide what he wants to do with their life now schools finished. If Basic knowledge and skills are implanted these youngsters will look to improve those skills wellafter the course is finished. Damning with faint praise the things that are being tried to improve employment in Belize is not fair. encouragement for more ventures of this kind is what is needed. Maybe some with less emphasis on the religious aspects as well, as this may dissuade some who are not regular church goers to apply.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree. 6 weeks is roughly 1/2 of one trade school semester. Since these are introductory courses, it's fair to assume the attendees have limited skills when they arrive. It's generally considered necessary to attend a trade school for four semesters to get the training to qualify for basic certifications, with continuing education afterwards. It's better than nothing and, perhaps, a good start, but without continuing education opportunities it's benefits will be severely limited and the students shortchanged.
