Would love to hear from some northern Belizians, how much of a hassle (if at all) it is to travel into Mexico to hit the Lowes, Walmart, etc... up there. Waiting in line ect...Is there an import tax on the goods brought back into Belize? Are there any restrictions on items that can be brought back? Thanks for any information!

On a tourist visa (i.e. not a permanet resident or citizen) there is a $40 exit fee, even on a day trip on return you will go through customs and have to pay duty on goods purchased in Mexico. Keep reciepts handy they will ask for them. Some items you cannot import including Beers and soft drinks. Weekends can be very busy going through the immigration hall, and the wonderful new road they put in, floods in heavy rains which can add to the delays and overall chaos. You shouldnt have to pay an exit fee from Mexico (in theory) for a trip of less than 72 hours, but sometimes hear complaints of expats being pressured into paying one. It can be a nice break time to fill up on sushi and see a new release blockbuster movie so have fun.

Thanks so much! Can you ballpark me on how much duty might be on $100 worth of groceries?

Depends on what they would consist of, and how the customs person is feeling that day some food items would be 0 some household as high as 40% so no knowing. I brought through some vlnyl tiles from Home depot for the kitchen floor, they are not available within Belize. I got charged at 40% but the customs reciept code stated they were curtains. so not always an easy estimate.

Also, Belize says you can bring 1 bottle of liquor in duty free but not if it's purchased near the border. You need to show a receipt for a purchase some (unknown) distance away or they collect duty
