My wife and I are making out second trip to Hopkins this coming September to celebrate our Anniversary.. Last time we were there (5yrs ago) we drove from Belize City and are doing so again. We remember a few little towns along the Western, Hummingbird, and Southern Hwys. We remember stopping at a little bar that sits up a hill just off the right side heading to Hopkins On I think the Humminbird but can't remember exactly where that is at or if it is still there. Would love to stop there again.

Is there any where else you would suggest stopping on the way to grab a drink and a bite to eat?

Thanks,
Rob

Thanks.. Any other place you would suggest.. This is our second time making the drive and feel more comfortable stopping along the way. Thinking of maybe stopping and doing the Blue Hole or a cave tubing trip..

The cave tubing you usually have to arrive by 8:30 am and takes most of the day. Save that for another day when you have more time. Remember it gets dark around 6 pm and you don't want to be on the Hummingbird after dark if you don't have to be.

Has anyone done the In Land Blue Hole? I believe that is on the way.. We get into Belize around Noon so should have a little time for a stop of 2 and still get to Hopkins by dark..Or should we head straight to Hopkins and do these things other days?

You can stop at the Blue Hole for a quick looksee. It's nice and not far off the highway. If you get in at noon it will take about an hour to get through customs and immigration before you pick up your car. (Crystal is the best) At least a 3 hour drive so you have at best 2 extra hours before dark.

I have an Explorer reserved from Alamo at airport or do you suggest switching? All I want to make sure is I have a reliable 4x4 vehicle.. Last time we were there we rented from https://www.belizeautorental.com/ cause it was the cheapest I could find but big mistake got a 06 escape that was road hard but got us from point a to point b..

Crystal has almost all Jeep brand in their fleet. They bring them down from the Texas auctions. Crystal also gives you a free phone and cooler to use during your stay. They also have the best customer service. They are from Texas and their managers mother lives just outside of Hopkins. https://www.crystal-belize.com/

We stopped there. While not a bad experience, keep your expectations on the lower side. This is a small cenote, not terribly deep, and not much else to see. The cave is also less impressive than a number of others we went to.

If you're looking for a quick dip to refresh, go for it.

We went tubing with http://cavetubing.bz/ and thoroughly enjoyed our time. I've spelunked in Carlsbad, Black hills, Gruta des Garcia MX, Monaco, Mammoth and Horse Cave in KY, and Ruby Falls, but we'd never gone tubing through a cave that didn't have artificial lighting.

If that sounds like good fun, it is! (If it sounds like something that would make you claustrophobic while being in total darkness seldom experienced, it probably is that too)

Just to say the Alamo in Belize is just a franchise which is not really backed by the parent group. Some well known US names have offices but I used one once as There was a "special Deal" on offer with the company i booked the flights with. Worst rental experience ever. The franchise had no cars( despite the friendly email reminder to pick up my car in Belize from the Us office) so the office found a different company I had never heard of who produced a Vehicle. It wasnt actually insured and the registration was out of date and it had "loose" steering a bit scary going down the hummingbird. Crystal is THE rental company to trust in Belize.
