In order to appreciate why this post regarding resistance to p. falciparun malaria species in Asia was made on the Belize Forums I would suggest reading point 3.2 in the link listed below. Infectious disease can and does move from one continent to another, from one hemisphere to another in a very rapid fashion compared with speed of transference in the pre-industrial world. Because of the dynamics of the infectious parasite, life-cycle and vectors, both mosquito vector and human carriers can transmit the drug-resistant parasite to Belize easily. It is wise for Public Health departments and citizens to be aware of these developments and try to prepare for their invasive presence into Belize. Before Belize did have some interventions available to prevent and treat these threats Belize was known as the "Mosquito Coast". A country and its health practitioners cannot gear up overnight to confront these kinds of issues; it takes lots of time, money, resources and hard work to prepare. This post is not about an imminent threat but it is wise to be aware of the realities before they become problematic. I am a serious scientist and I do not engage in dubious supposition or fear-mongering.

The Mosquito Coast is geographically in Nicaragua. The movie of the same name was shot in Belize.

I stand corrected. I think the whole eastern lowland coastal area of Central America in the colonial days was referred to as the Mosquito Coast, taken not from the insect name but from the name of the Cabib Moskito Indians. Later various people involved in infectious tropical disease surveillance used the appelation Mosquito Coast to refer to the lowland moist eastern coastal areas because one of the main concerns was the prevalence of malaria. Does anyone know if bednets are still being distributed in infested areas and spraying of insecticide is occurring? I remember that during visits I made to Belize in 1999 that some swampy areas were being drained to eliminate so much standing water as an engineering control for infectious disease vectors.
