My wife and myself are going to Belize for the first time. All of the sites that I have read only mention Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit fish and a few others, but mainly all sport fish. I'm curious as to what types of fish there are to eat. We are going to be chartering a guided trip, most likely off the barrier reef, any suggestions on a guide? We would also like to do a couple hours of snorkeling while we are out there.

Individual guides primarily operate out of specific locations, so it would be helpful to know where you are going before recommending a guide. There are dozens of fishing and snorkeling guides throughout the country and all are supposed to be licensed. So do insure that you are hiring a licensed guide and you will have a great time.

If your going to be in Hopkins you will want to book Lincoln Westby for fly fishing. If you can't get him Ask for Flyod. If you want to bottom fish for dinner. I would look up Happy Go Lucky tours. They are easy to find, just south of the junction and on the ocean side.

Your tour office at Hopkins Bay can book with the guys JohnP recommends, or you can contact them direct. For private snorkel and scuba tours Boo is the guy at Seemore Adventures.

We have gone fishing with Seemore several times. Some trips are better than others but last time Jarmaine took us fishing and we caught a ton of fish!!
Between the 3 of us that were fishing, we caught 5 barracuda, a handful of snapper, grouper and a variety of throw them back fish.
We were with a group that had both boats out and the snorkelers grabbed some conch and the divers shot some lionfish. We feasted at our lunch break on the island!

Hmm, a very important tip. I will take note of this. Thanks, Osprey!

Loc: Tarpon Springs, Fl./Copper Ban...
Yes, some species of snapper can be caught from shore, as well as snook and sheepshead. There are also grunts and drums in the same areas.
