How Many in Belize?

Estimated Numbers:
West Indian Manatee (Trichechus manatus) 1 1,000
Jaguar (Panthera onca) 2 600-1,000
Howler Monkey (Alouatta pigra) 3 10,000+
American Saltwater Crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus) 4 1,000
Morelet's Crocodiles (Crocodylus moreletii) 5 8,800

2 Alan R. Rabinowitz, 1991; some more recent estimates suggest the number of jaguars in Belize has declined
3 Reliable estimates of howler monkeys in all of Belize have not been found, although the population in the Baboon Sanctuary reportedly has grown to about 6,000, while the population near Monkey River is believed to have declined from over 11,000 to about 1,500 following Hurricane Iris in 2001

Lan, great information ! smile I had no idea there were so many howler monkeys or morelet's crocodiles. That's very encouraging. 600-1,000 Jaguars is a sizable population as well. I hope the collective numbers of all these species grow or least maintain their current populations.

Thanks !

According to Panthera the Jaguars are around 750 but unfortunately split into two areas which are both below the size thought to be sustainable populations. The Wildlife corridor is a last chance attempt to link the populations.
The American Crocodile has rebounded in numbers since 2000 and as such has been taken off the endangered species list, which won't do much for their conservation in Belize. Morelets crocs have unfortunately declined.

Please note the dates of the research. I know for a fact that American crocodile numbers have decreased since 2000. And please also keep in mind that the Mexico research on Morelet's is only an extrapolation from studies done in Mexico, not actual data from Belize.

The American crocodile numbers that have rebound were in Florida, not Belize.

As you probably know more about crocodiles in Belize than anyone else, what would be your estimates or guestimates on populations of the Morelet's and Saltwater crocodiles in Belize?

I'll be competing a publishable paper in the next few months on the population of American crocs in Ambergris Caye. From the data in my head of the past year and half here, and six years studying the rivers of southern Toledo, I would say less then 800 including adults, sub-adults, juveniles, and yearlings; not including this years hatchlings. I would say that approximately 30% are adults. Please remember that <1% survive to reach sexual maturity. Please do not quote me yet on this data for I am still in the process of compiling information for a proper size, sex, population distribution in this region.

As for the Morelet's, Dr. Frank Mazzotti would be the person with the best educated estimate of their population status. Personally, Vince has explored some areas in Belize, such as Cox Lagoon for one example, that in the past were documented to have healthy self-sustainable populations and he only documented 6 Morelet's over a two night survey. The extrapolation from the data collected in the Mexico study is based on available habitat and does not take into account the number of crocs needlessly killed, by Mennonites for one.

Finally, poaching is on the increase do to hunting shows like "Swamp People." We actually have documented several large American crocs here on the island (6 to 10 feet) that have had their tail's chopped off to be sold on the black market, and then have been thrown back. While the animal does survive the injury, they proceed to die a slow painful death of starvation unable to accommodate for the severed tail. I'm talking chopped off almost up to the cloaca.

Hope this info helps and I will post my final paper publicly once it is complete. On our website: AmericanCrocodileSanctuary.org under documents, my March 2011 research updates were published in the Crocodile Specialist Group Newsletter. Additionally, my research updates are available at: http://www.ruffordsmallgrants.org/rsg/projects/cherie_chenotrose

Bad for the croc's but next time we decided to get drunk and swim in the Sittee River in front of the Curve Bar I won't feel quite so dumb when I sober up! LOL

The jaguar data is from 1991 - I expect it's changed since then but not in a good way.
