Yes I have a suggestion. Bring in your own camper, RV or motor home. They are far less expensive when purchased in the states. Buying one here in Belize would make no sense what-so-ever. First of all, they're not generably available for sale here. Secondly, they are in limited supply and in terrible condition. Thirdly, you can get fantastic deals din the states right now.

Buy a camper/trailer you like (I can give you suggestions) and bring it to Bellze.

If you decide to bring in your own, You should check first to see what the duty is. We have had a few People take there's back to U.S. because the duty was so High.

As C_M correctly stated. RV's Campers are not commonly available in Belize and tend to be expensive when they are.

However, it's a great idea to have some form of temporary accommodation on site during construction so here are a couple of suggestions which are not as wacky as they may initially sound.

1. Buy/rent a large low-loader trailer in Belize ~15ft - These are often available. Have a simple wooden Mennonite style home constructed that will fit on the trailer. While the house is being made, have your septic tank built on your lot. (or decide to use an outhouse) When Your temporary house is finished, drive the trailer with the house upon it to your lot. Set it down in an appropriate position (doesn't have to be on a foundation). Finish off basic interior work, connect a toilet to your new septic tank and take out the trailer to use during construction for bringing supplies to site and to offset delivery costs which can mount up! After construction, change your Mennonite house into a shed/store or resell it and the trailer to someone else looking to do the same!

Quotes for whatever size custom-built Mennonite houses can be obtained. from
e.g Linda Vista Homes - lvly@btl.net 501-823-0257 -
They can deliver the house for you if you felt you did not need a trailer reducing costs further - and allowing you a roomier place than what would fit on a trailer.

2. Buy a 40' roadworthy 8 wheeled lorry container unit. These are often available for $2500BZ+. Divide it in half and turn one half into living quarters, the other half can be used as secure/dry storage for building materials/cement during your construction. Install a few windows, a door etc While doing this get your septic built (or decide to use an outhouse). Get the trailer towed to your site. Connect to your septic. After your build sell the whole package to someone considering the same. You will have no problem selling it on for the same use to someone who wants an onsite office/store/accommodation for watchman etc

Both options would come in at less than the price of a basic RV, are less difficult to do than they sound plus offer additional advantages.

In fact I would even go so far as to say that there is a little business for someone in Belize to do these simple and cheap conversions and have them for sale to people who are looking to build their own homes.

Chris

P.S Another option would be to buy an old school bus - also commonly available in Belize and do a simple conversion. This I think would end up more expensive in the end and not offer as many additional uses during your project.

When I drove to the Belize Airport last there was one for sale in Ladyville just past the Jehovas Witness compound and the speed bumps after that intersection on the left side of the road heading into Belize City.

I have to say that bringing one will mean you have to pay duties and they are very hefty!! It cost us as much as we paid for it in the states just in Duties plus all the aggravation of going back and forth to customs to get it all figured out.

But, It has more than paid for itself as there are no fee's for rental. It was an 1983 model. lol Could have been a Porsche the way they went over it!!

There is a fith wheeler in the customs compound out at the Northern Border. Its been there a couple of Months. I don't know the story on it. But I would bet it has something to do with the duty on it. Its a Big One.

If you will be using QRP, there is no duty. Something to consider.

Check with "Crystal Auto Rentals" near the Haulover Bridge in Belize City. Jay Crofton is the owner.
